The Shift Research Team, located at the University of Calgary, has been working closely with the Calgary Police Service since 2020. In that time, they have undertaken a number of policy and culture change projects related to addressing sexual harassment, enhancing gender equity, and increasing psychological safety, belonging, and inclusion within the Calgary Police Service.

My son recently had a birthday and while talking about how he wanted to celebrate, I told him that the country we live in, Canada, is having a big birthday next year and that there would be lots of parties and fun things to do to commemorate the occasion. In typical young child fashion he had a lot of questions and asked me, “What is so special about Canada? Why would we have a party for a country? Parties are for people!” I replied that we are lucky to live in Canada and that it is a very special place, worthy of wonderful celebrations. In the words of former Ontario Premier Bob Rae:

“We have it all. We have great diversity of people, we have a wonderful land, and we have great possibilities. So all those things combined, there is nowhere else I’d rather be.”

I agree. Happy Birthday Canada.
