Getting in “The Zone”: A Deeper Dive into Respect

About This Course

A respectful workplace is more than just one that is free from harassment and discrimination. Employees truly thrive in those workplaces where they feel like they belong, and fundamental respect is a critical component for creating this key sense of belonging. In our core Respect at Work course, we call this type of workplace “The Zone.” This course goes beyond basic harassment training and looks at the “everyday bumps and bruises” of the workplace. It is designed to turn attendees’ attention inward to focus on and consider their own behaviour when looking at how to get and stay in The Zone.

We start by discussing the impact of disrespectful behaviour in the workplace and its negative repercussions. We then work with participants to create a “Respect Code,” which can be unique to their specific workplace/group. Finally, we provide a variety of options for dealing with disrespectful behaviour in the workplace.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding why deeply respectful workplace behaviour matters
  • Distinguishing between being respectful and “being nice”
  • Exploring various strategies for dealing with workplace disrespect, and checking our own behaviour

Course Topics Include

  • A review of the harms of disrespect (and the benefits of respect)
  • Discussion of different disrespectful scenarios and their negative impacts
  • Analysis of behaviours that make up a deeply respectful workplace – the “Respect Code”
  • What deep respect is not
  • Ways in which the Respect Code can be put into practice
  • Addressing disrespect through:
    • Calling a “timeout”
    • Having a deeper conversation (using the “LEARN” technique)
    • Self-management
