DURATION
This is a two-day course, running from 10am - 5pm (EST/EDT) each day.

PREREQUISITES
Registrants for Conducting Sexual Misconduct Investigations: University & College Edition must have attended Workplace Investigation Fundamentals before they can attend this session.

About this course

If a student at your institution makes a report of sexual misconduct, how should you investigate and establish the facts? These complaints can be uniquely challenging for internal investigators — but are more common than ever before. This hands-on, advanced-level training is a must for any frontline staff who may respond to and/or investigate such complaints. Internal investigators will leave confident and prepared.

While sexual harassment and sexual violence may impact individuals differently, there are some physical and emotional effects that are common. Impacts may begin following the first incident and continue for long after the harassment or violence has stopped.

It is important to note that the negative individual and organizational impacts of sexual harassment and sexual violence can be mitigated or aggravated by the institution’s response to the incident(s).

Please note: The content provided in this course is the same as our "Conducting Sexual Harassment and Violence Investigations: University & College Edition” course.

Testimonials

This course builds upon the Workplace Investigation Fundamentals workshop. It speaks directly to conducting a fair and thorough investigation in a manner that respects all parties involved. The facilitators have brilliant insight into the challenges of these types of investigations and provide a safe space to ask questions, practices skills, and gain confidence, so participants can effectively conduct their own investigations. Highly recommended.

– Elise Kruithof, Burman University

This course was practical and highly informative. I feel much more comfortable with the process of investigating complaints from our university campus community and feel empowered in my personal skillset and understanding of the complex issues around complaints.

– Carol Hofer, Director of Athletics, Trinity Western University

This course was exactly what professionals in student services, EDI, or Human Resources need to support often complex sexual harassment or sexual violence investigations or policy development. Great to have this specific to higher education — the cases were real. Extremely valuable. I highly recommend this course.

– Kimberley Neutens, Dean of Students, Alberta University of the Arts

I attended the University/College Edition of Conducting Sexual Harassment and Violence Investigations in July 2021, at the recommendation of several colleagues in the post-secondary sector who described the quality of Rubin Thomlinson’s training as excellent. I was not disappointed! The training was excellent for several reasons: it was adapted to the needs of investigators working with student complainants, respondents, and witnesses; it employed a lot of practical experiential exercises to reinforce concepts and approaches; and Christine and Cory had a very humble and constructive instructional style. I came away from the training with practical knowledge that I have already begun to apply. I very much look forward to my next opportunity to learn with Rubin Thomlinson again and I highly recommend their training sessions for anyone working as an investigator.

– Norma Jean Barrett, Director, Student Conduct Office, Queen's University

I have attended all the workshops provided by Rubin Thomlinson. I find the materials, the role-playing exercises, and examples provided by the facilitators are practicable and can be applied to the workforce immediately. You leave the session with real world tools to assist you in your job.

Participants will also have the opportunity to experience a role-play of an investigation. Through the use of actors and prepared fact-patterns, we simulate two actual investigations, including conducting interviews with the complainant, respondent, and witnesses. This course allows participants to not only understand the fundamentals of both a sexual harassment and a sexual violence investigation, but also to experience the investigations first-hand, with participants playing the role of investigator.
